  23. <meta content="In the introduction of this special issue of Botanica Marina,
  24. we established the scope of this topic around a series
  25. of questions, which also provided a framework for integrating
  26. the different contributions and a means of highlighting
  27. deficiencies in knowledge and understanding
  28. (Johnson and Chapman 2007). In defining challenges for
  29. the future and suggesting how those challenges might
  30. best be tackled to optimize returns on research investment,
  31. it is useful to revisit those questions under four
  32. main headings dealing with species introductions per se,
  33. the invasion process, consequences of invasions and
  34. human responses to the threat and occurrence of
